Robert Erlanger

Robert began practicing law in 1985 as a litigation associate for a 100+ attorney general practice law firm.  At a smaller, high-powered firm, he represented companies sued for negligence under insurance policies but also began to successfully represent plaintiffs in the same type of lawsuits.  Robert formed his own firm in February 2003.

Robert has substantial experience in both New York state and federal courts. He has handled many, many different kinds of lawsuits that settled or resulted in jury verdicts: construction site accidents; wrongful death from mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure; defective products; international air travel injuries; falls caused by dangerous conditions on properties; negligent operation and security; civil rights violations (hostile workplace, discrimination, false arrest, and excessive use of force); defamation; pedestrian knockdowns; malicious prosecution; breach of contract; and co-op board breach of fiduciary duty. Robert also brings lawsuits against unions under federal law for breach of the union member “Bill of Rights” or duty of fair representation.

Robert’s highest jury verdict, $15 million ($10M compensation, $5M punitive damages), was awarded by a federal court jury against foreign international airline for its role in illegally flying an American child out of the country in violation of a court custody order. His highest negotiated settlement, $2.7 million, was in a Rockland County wrongful death case – mesothelioma from asbestos exposure – with the surviving spouse and two children ultimately receiving a total of $4.7 million in current and deferred payments.

In 2012, Robert was selected as a Member, The National Trial Lawyers, Top 100 Trial Lawyers in New York. The National Trial Lawyers is a professional organization composed of the premier trial lawyers from across the country who exemplify superior qualifications as civil plaintiff or criminal defense trial lawyers. Robert was first selected as a New York Metro SuperLawyer, in 2006 for General Litigation and then 2009 through 2023, for Plaintiff’s Personal Injury. SuperLawyers is a highly respected attorney ratings organization that identifies the top 5% of lawyers from more than 70 different practice areas for their unmatched commitment, skills, and client satisfaction. Robert also has the highest rating by his colleagues – AV-preeminent – in Martindale, the international lawyer’s directory.

For 16 years, Robert was on the volunteer mediation panel for the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. He successfully mediated cases involving negligence, insurance coverage, copyright infringement, breach of commercial and employment contracts, and workplace discrimination.

In prior lives, Robert worked in management for two once prominent airlines, Trans World Airlines and Pan American World Airways. At Pan Am, he was System Director of Marketing Planning, in charge of the Airline’s marketing plan and market research.

Robert graduated with a BA in history from Columbia College, where he was on the varsity swimming team, and a Master of International Affairs from the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs. He received his Juris Doctor in 1985 from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, where he was Research Editor, Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal and a Belkin Scholar. Robert was a summer law clerk for the Hon. H. Lee Sarokin, U.S. District Court of New Jersey.

Robert is admitted to practice law in New York and before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and New Jersey, the U.S. Appeals Courts for the Second and Third Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court. He is member of the New York City Bar Association.
